FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF FREEPORT

The mission of First Baptist Church is to glorify God,
love others, and make disciples of Jesus Christ.

The First Baptist Church of Freeport was initially founded in 1807. We are affiliated with the American Baptist Churches USA (https://www.abc-usa.org/) and more specifically the American Baptist Churches of Maine (https://abcom.org/).

Our church facilities (just north of Freeport village on Route One) include a 200-seat meetinghouse (completed in 1952), a large Christian Education building located next door, and a parsonage (built in 2003).

The Christian Education building is typically used for Sunday School classes. But it has also been used by Head Start, Young Life, Maine Classical School and, currently, by the Freeport Montessori preschool.

Our congregation, including both members and non-members, numbers about 75, ranging from infants to some in their nineties. About fifty percent of the congregation lives in communities surrounding Freeport. Due to our location, tourists often attend the services, and during the school year students of local colleges may also attend.

As a church we are committed to the centrality of Scripture in all areas of life. Our members, however, exhibit a refreshing range of theological and political beliefs, making our church a welcome home for Christians of all walks of life.

We gather on Sunday mornings for Sunday School (usually on pause during the summer) and Worship, monthly for Praise & Prayer, and weekly in a variety of prayer groups, Bible Studies, and book clubs.

Our Sunday service lasts for about one hour and includes hymns, Bible readings, preaching, and prayer. The music is accompanied by piano with assistance from other musicians and/or vocalists and includes both traditional and contemporary hymns and songs. Other worship services, such as Christmas Eve, Good Friday, and Easter Sunrise, are held and often include other local churches.

Our church recently changed its leadership model from one Elder/Pastor to a board of Elders and developed teams including: Buildings & Grounds, Family Ministry, Communications, Discipleship, Missions & Outreach, and Worship.
